CurrentExhibitionHOMECOMING
Homecoming is the inaugural exhibition of Gallery SSS, a group show bringing together artists whose stories, like Sarah's own, began in Michigan or the greater Midwest before leading them elsewhere. The exhibition explores how the region's landscapes, seasons, materials, and cultural rhythms continue to inform creative practices shaped in places far beyond their origins. At its heart, Homecoming is about the complicated and enduring relationship between where we come from and the work we go on to make.
The exhibition celebrates an extraordinary range of material practices. Clay, wood, glass, fiber, leather, aluminum, pigment, and reclaimed materials each become distinct ways of exploring memory, transformation, and place. Together, these works open a dialogue between disciplines, revealing unexpected relationships through the language of material itself. Visitors will encounter works that blur traditional boundaries between art, craft, and design. Furniture is approached as sculpture, photography gives way to painting, fiber becomes architectural, and functional materials are transformed into expressive forms.
Grand Rapids has long been recognized as a center for design, furniture making, and craftsmanship. Homecoming builds upon that legacy while expanding the conversation, reconnecting the region with artists whose work has traveled well beyond its borders and bringing their voices together for the first time in a shared exhibition.
As the gallery's inaugural exhibition, Homecoming reflects the vision of Gallery SSS: a place where art, design, and craft exist without hierarchy, where material exploration and creative exchange are celebrated, and where meaningful connections are forged between artists, audiences, and ideas. It is both a return and a beginning.
