in my bag: thanksgiving

in-my-bag-thanksgiving

Yay for the holidays, downtime, family, and lots of good food. I am so looking forward to all of it. This year we are planning to have Thanksgiving at the new A-frame, as long as it is habitable at that moment, and I am already packing my virtual bag. A cozy sweater wrap to hide the extra servings of turkey dinner, comfy pajamas for when the tryptophan kicks in, a bucket bag to tuck in some leftovers, and some gilded slippers to up the class while you are watching football in your PJs. Now bring on the pumpkin pie!

from the weekend: thanksgiving

thanksgiving weekendI hope you all had a really great extra long Thanksgiving weekend. We spent turkey day with just a few friends this year, Amanda of 100 layer cake obviously knows how to put together a table (and cook a turkey for that matter. :)). It was a day filled with thanks, football, yummy eats, and lingering at the table for hours with good conversation. Everything Thanksgiving should be cracked up to be. Oh how I love the holidays and am not afraid to be a total nerd about it.

The rest of the weekend Rupe and I laid pretty low enjoying the quiet time with just the two of us before baby’s February arrival. We dug a few christmas decorations out, did a little shopping small on saturday, brunched, got a mani & pedi, and then traded in my Mini Cooper for a more mommy sized car (I may have cried when I had to turn in the keys. Stupid but true… I realllly liked that car. ha).

How did you guys spend your holiday?

Thanksgiving Tablescape Ideas & Giveaway

holiday table ideas & giveaway // smitten studioholiday table ideas & giveaway // smitten studioIt is probably no surprise that one of my favorite parts of the holidays is setting up a pretty table to gather around. It doesn’t have to be over the top or heavily themed, but I like to pull out the gold flatware and add a few unique pieces to make the table a little extra special. I’m calling this year’s a “natural luxe” tablescape.

To help you re-create a similar look I’ve listed a few ideas to try on your Thanksgiving table and I’ve teamed up with two amazing brands, The Citizenry and Suite One Studio, to give away these gorgeous pieces so that one lucky winner can get a head start!

For a holiday table I usually like to start with a charger, then add a napkin, then dinner plate and usually top it off with something decorative (like the pheasant feather) at each place setting. This table got its’ extra layer of luxe with the gold rimmed dessert plate and gold rimmed bowl that would be perfect for a little amuse bouche.

Thanksgiving celebrates a time of harvest and bounty so why not create a centerpiece from the farmer’s market or just the produce aisle at your local grocery store. To keep it looking tasteful I stuck with a monochromatic palette. I love the texture of the artichokes which I used to make the bulk of the arrangement and then added in pears, gourds, and a little eucalyptus to fill it out.

This year I stuck with a neutral color palette and relied heavily on the patterns and textures of all the natural elements to up the luxe factor. Black, white, brown, and gold make for a rich color combination but bringing in the textures of the cow horn tumbler, pheasant feather, marble tabletop, cowhide rug, and wood grain planter take it to a whole ‘nother level.

Thanksgiving table for two

thanksgiving table for two // A Sunny Afternoon // Smitten StudioThis year Rupert and I are going to have a Thanksgiving meal, just the two of us, cooking in our kitchen together (it will be the first real meal cooked in the new space!) and reflecting on all we are thankful for before heading out to drop in on a few friends’ celebrations around town.

thanksgiving table for two // A Sunny Afternoon // Smitten Studiothanksgiving table for two // A Sunny Afternoon // Smitten StudioI like to set the table the day before (in this case two days before, because I am feeling festively nerdy) so that the next day we can dedicate all our time to the food. I make a pretty good mess in the kitchen and since I don’t cook all that often, I have to concentrate hard on getting all the timing right. One less thing to think about helps make sure we aren’t eating dry stuffing or cold turkey. ;)

How are you guys spending your Turkey Day?

From the weekend: Thanksgiving

11.25 thanksgiving tableHere is a little peek into our Thanksgiving table. I luckily recovered from the flu enough on Turkey Day to be able to break bread along with Rupert, my sister, her husband and their daughter. They flew in from Wyoming that day and stayed the weekend. It was so nice getting to spend time with my little niece (she’s two and a half) and she spent the rest of the weekend trying on every pair of my shoes, decorating the christmas tree, and basically wrapping us right around her finger.

I hope everyone else had a love filled Thanksgiving.
