Summer Happy Hour

summer happy hour - patio ideasIt’s a shame we don’t really use this back corner of our yard enough year round, but it’s that time of year when we have dusted off the cushions and are putting it to good use again. Especially for happy hour use. I teamed up with Target again to deck it out and throw a laid back weekday hang.

style story: off the shoulder

spring pastels // off the shoulder top // sarah sherman samuel Summer is a coming and off-the-shoulder tops have reached the mass market, like reached and exploded all over it. You might remember when I bought this same top in blush last year for our Mexico trip, and while I was browsing around Topshop recently I came across it in this gorgeous shade of citrus/yellow/green and I just went ahead and got it again. I couldn’t help myself, I still love the structure of it and the silhouette (they also now have it in Salmon, Orange, Light Blue, and Ivory).

I met up with Heather Kincaid, who is the talent behind these photos, in West Hollywood and you would never know this bougainvillea and cactus are just in some random alley we found on our way to a juice bar. Kind of a perfect compliment to the summery pastels.

Now for the serious talk…. Are you pro off-the-shoulder or anti?

from the weekend: endless summer

09.15.14-weekendJust as the rest of the country is cooling down, LA gets hotter than ever. September and October here always feel more like summer than any of the other months and we are soaking up every last bit. I am finally starting to feel a bit like myself again after the first trimester had me down for the count, and it was beyond wonderful to be able to get out and hang with friends, celebrate a dear one’s birthday, spend some time at the beach, dine al fresco, and even do a little shopping.

This weekend was also the kick off to the Gap #DressNormalProject that I was a part of. There was a Gap pop-up shop on Abbot Kinney where some of the photos I took of my friends/turned Gap models were featured alongside some talented LA photographers. It was so fun seeing my friends all over the walls of the shop (Rupe was pretty excited to see his own pretty face. ;) You can read more about it here, in the LA Times.

Hope you had a nice weekend! x

creative’s dish: Ashley of ABJ Glassworks

ashley-abj-glassworksToday’s creative’s dish features the talented maker behind ABJ Glassworks, Ashley Bram-Johnson. She creates beautiful modern pieces for the home using traditional stained glass methods. I own one of her terrariums (like shown above), which might be my favorite pieces she creates, but the jewelry boxes and lamps are pretty freaking amazing too. Ashley has been a busy bee working on her upcoming autumn collection (can’t wait to see the new designs!), so I was thrilled that she was able to participate in the series.

watermelon salad recipe // smitten studioAshley currently calls Philadelphia home so we weren’t able to get together in person, but she sent me over a recipe for a watermelon salad and I couldn’t think of a better place to try it out then at the cabin! Learn more about Ashley and get the full taste-of-summer watermelon salad recipe after the jump…

my style: summer loving

beach-tunic-smittenstudio4Not long ago I found myself in Palm Springs for a pool party and realized I somehow forgot to pack a kaftan/tunic/beach cover-up. I mean CRISIS! ;) Minutes before the party we were downtown and I saw the perfect one hanging in a storefront window, so I rushed in and bought the lacey tunic before I even knew where I was and before my stylish friends could find out the truth about my lapse in packing skills. Lo and behold, this is my true story about when Chico’s saved the day!

beach-tunic-smittenstudio3beach-tunic-smittenstudio5beach-tunic-smittenstudio6beach-tunic-smittenstudioWord of my brush with ‘pool party dress code failure’ spanned across the land and Chico’s wanted me to share the harrowing tale with you (OK, the spreading of the word part didn’t really happen, but when they asked me to work with them, I jumped at the chance to share my story and my new secret (now, not-so-secret) source for beach/pool wear). A couple other beachy items on my list are this bag and this poncho.

a sunny afternoon summer collection release

a-sunny-afternoon-summer-lookbook-woodnote-2I’m excited to announce the launch of my new A Sunny Afternoon summer items! I had so much fun shooting the lookbook for this release, as it includes a few of my favorite items to date. It also didn’t hurt working with a great crew, Caroline & Jayden of Woodnote on photography and Tim and Merrill Melideo modeling.
