round up

urban outfitters home sale

I woke up this morning to an email saying Urban Outfitters was having a huge home sale so naturally I spent way too much money buying things I don’t really need but will most certainly love and you better believe I used the blog and the fact that “I *might* have a client that this would be perfect for” to justify my full shopping cart. Over the years I have found some real gems of unique pieces that give a lot of bang for your buck from UO… their furniture and accessories and lately I’ve even been loving some of their lighting! So, I’ve rounded up my favorite picks from the sale… some seriously good steals. (links below)

Best of 2017

I’m taking a moment to look back at the year today and sharing my top 10 highlights of 2017!

1. Travel Stories: Amangiri
In January I shared about our trip to Amangiri, in Utah. It was one of my favorite and most inspiring vacations of all time, inspiring one of my bathroom renovations as well as some artwork that I turned into textile patterns.

2. Modernism Week: Christopher Kennedy Compound
In February I took part in the Modernism Week Show house in Palm Springs by the Christopher Kennedy Compound where I designed one of the guest rooms and got to use my Agate wallpaper for the first time.

3. DIY posts
DIY posts are always some of my favorites and when I made this wall hanging for our bedroom you guys loved it as well! A couple other DIY faves were the HEADBOARD I made in the A-frame and the CREDENZA I made in our studio.

4. Nursery & Master Bedroom Reveal: Max & Margaux WangerOne project I loved was the master bedroom/nursery makeover for Max & Margaux Wanger. They, similarly to what I just went through, have a small two bedroom house and had their second baby on the way so they hired me to help them utilize their master bedroom space to welcome their new babe.

We’ve been working on it all year and construction is wrapping up so stay tuned for loads more progress posts and the full reveal to come soon!

And with that I will say Happy New Year to you and I will see you in 2018 which is already shaping up for some great projects that I can’t wait to share. xo

Black and White Rug Round Up

living room renovation // before & after // sarah sherman samuelI find myself constantly sourcing black and white rugs for spaces, they are incredibly versatile and can bring a modern tailored look to a room. After posting our A-frame Living room reveal and getting a bazillion of questions on where I found that top rug (found it on ebay) I thought I would share my favorite monochromatic beauties that are on the internet right now.

black and white rug round up // sarah sherman samuel When possible I like to source vintage or one of a kind rugs for unique spaces and Ebay and Etsy are two of my favorite sites to scour and to hopefully find a deal. I’ve got a few of those mixed in above as well as other go-to big box sites and lesser known sites for black and whites that haven’t been used a million times before. Happy Shopping!

top 16 of 2016

I’ve been holed up at my parents in Michigan for the holidays, introducing Archie to snow for the first time and generally checking the heck out, but as 2016 is coming to a close I couldn’t help but reflect on the year on the blog. Here’s my favorite 16 posts from 2016. Happy New Year!

light lab kitchen by sarah sherman samuel1. One of my favorite projects this year was designing the creative warehouse space called Light Lab. It was a complete blank canvas and I had so much fun bringing it to life. See the full reveal tour here.

johnnycash-party2. Another highlight of the year was Archie’s 1st birthday/my 34th. Turns out sharing a birthday with your son can be pretty great and we celebrated with a Johnny Cash birthday bash! See the party post here.

sss-studio16s3. I moved into a new studio space, see the full tour here! And the studio breaking in party, here.

encuentro-mexico44: I posted about our road trip to Mexico which was a true highlight. Glamping our way through Mexican wine country… see the post here.

baby-proofing-livingroom6-6405: It came time to baby proof things in the Samuel household. We didn’t make a ton of changes but see the home tour and how we made our house more Archer friendly in the post, here.

sss_summer_evening-soiree6: We built a new modern pergola in the backyard and took full advantage of it in this summer soiree to remember.

kitchen-progress-a-frame3-faucet7. Construction has been ohhh so slow on the A-frame but we made some progress in the kitchen, laundry room, and living room. Hoping to finish this place up in 2017 so we can start enjoying it! See all the A-frame progress here.

culottes-crop-top88. My style hasn’t changed a ton since having Archie but I’ve fully embraced the mom cliche of high-waisted pants. See more of my personal style posts here.

kristinaandsarah6409: My friend Kristina had her third child and while she was still expecting I made over her master bedroom. See the “modern organic” tour here.

patio-after8-640-110: Our Los Angeles home renovations are complete (until we decide to add a second floor or something crazy like that, that is) and I shared the before & after of the back patio this summer. See all the renovation progress here.

the-amado11: With the renovations going on in our A-frame, we’ve been spending gobs of time in Palm Springs. One of our favorite stays was at the Amado, see the post here.

say-cloud-sarahshermansamuel12: I teamed up with Say Kids on a T-shirt collaboration, using the cloud print I designed for Archer’s wallpaper. See the Tee post here and Archer’s nursery tour here.

bathroom-213: We put the final touches on our main bath, brass shelves, herringbone tile, hexagon floor… see the “before & after” tour here. P.s. we also did an update in the master bath.

copper-plant-stands-diy1-114: DIY projects are always some of the best posts and these plant stands were a big hit. See the tutorial here.

guest-room-holidays7-64015: Speaking of DIY… this quick 5-minute woven headboard might be my personal favorite. See the tutorial here.

trullbrook-client-kitchen-finishes16: And finally, I introduced my latest client renovation project, starting with the kitchen design and I can not wait to share share the rest. 2017 is already looking good! See the post here.

a designers children book round-up

designers guide to the best childrens books // round-up // sarah sherman samuelWe are BIG into children’s books around here, especially Archie. It’s built into our bedtime routine, nap routine, morning routine, and many times a day he will carry one around grunting in the way he does when we wants something, “eh eh, eh eh, eh eh” meaning read to me pleassssse.
I put a call out for everyone’s favorite books about a year ago, on instagram, and since then, we have been devouring them like crazy and I wanted to share my list of absolute favorites.

Some books don’t hold his interest at all, and some he wants over and over and over again. Of course it changes as he gets older, but there are some that I love for design/illustrations and storyline (huge bonus when it’s both like Gaston and Henry’s Bright Idea) and ones that he loves (the ones that hold his interest all the way through from start to finish) and those crossovers are what made my very select list of favorite books.

walnut-animal-society-book-henrys-ideaOH and I totally judge a children’s book by the cover. Archie is most attracted to clean illustrations (as am I, obv). When there is too much going I think it was hard for him to take anything in. He has started to look at busier, more detailed picture books now that he is older but from age 6 – 12 months those Moe Willems Pigeon Books were almost all he ever wanted. Each page is super simple with just a flat image of the pigeon on a solid color. We bought every single one of them because they are so good… clever, funny, well designed… and Archie was obsessed. Two of those made the list, but really all of them are great.

And still my favorite book of all is Gaston. I think I have bought this one book 7 times now giving it as a gift for friends with kids or babies on the way. It was one of the first books I got after Archie was born and there were many a night when I would stand by the kitchen extractor fan (serving as a giant white noise machine) bouncing a swaddled newborn Archie to sleep while reading “Fi Fi, Foo Foo, Ooh La La and Gaston…”. Each page is a frame worthy illustration and the story is so sweet.

designers guide to the best childrens books // round-up // sarah sherman samuel If you are only in the market to add a few books to your library, make sure the top 3 (but really the top 6) are in there. Those are our absolute favorites of the favorites.

Happy Reading!!

Gaston // Extra Yarn // Henry’s Bright Idea // Mr. Tiger Goes Wild // An Awesome Book // The Pigeon Needs a Bath // Home // I Want My Hat Back // My Teacher is a Monster // Wolfie the Bunny // The Day the Crayons Quit // The Little Gardener // Big Bear Hug // This Moose Belongs to Me // The Wonderful Things You Will Be // Cats Night Out // The Pigeon Wants a Puppy // Archie and the Pirates (I mean how could I not?)
