Bri’s Dining Room Makeover

dining room makeover // before & after // design love fest // sarah sherman samuelWhen Bri of Design Love Fest bought her new house she settled in fairly quickly but one room that went relatively untouched was the dining room. When she reached out to me to design her patio space she also wanted to tackle a few other areas in the house and the neglected dining was next on our list. I am excited to share the transformation!

One of the first things we did was extend the marble countertop on the passthrough from the kitchen so that we could add bar stools and create a space for friends to sit and chat while Bri was in the kitchen. The cutout was there before but with no countertop overhang it created an odd dead space (you’ll see in the before photos below). Just that extra 12″ of marble makes such a huge difference in the room.

When we started talking about the feel Bri wanted for the space, she was inspired by a recent trip to Japan and the use of clean lines and natural textures, which obviously was speaking my language. We wanted to create a calm vibe that still had some personality. I made a feature wall starting with the low credenza and combined it with custom shelves and a custom mirror so they all work together as one and we added artwork and small treasures for display.

And now for some before and after’s…

We moved the off center lighting and traded the pendant for two warm jute lamps, added the graphic striped rug and those gorgeous green chairs to finish off the space.

In this before shot is where you can see the marble stopped flush with the pony wall but now that we added the overhang and those perfectly simple stools it looks much more finished. Also, how gorgeous is that Blockshop scarf hanging in the corner? (this design is no  longer available but they have other beautiful options here).

Shop the look:

Jute Pendants // Half Moon Mirror (ours was custom and much larger but here is a ready made version) // Vases // Credenza // Green Chairs from Rypen // Artwork from Tappan // Rug // Dining Table

Additional Sources: Counter Stools from All Modern // Hanging Textile by BlockShop // Large Planter by CB2 // Floating Shelves by Semi-Handmade //

Tappan art pieces: lani trock flowers, caroline denervaud shapes, eric chakeen camel sky and courtdeerdana kiss

Next up is her kitchen!

Bri’s Finished Patio Tour

patio makeover sarah sherman samuel x design love festI’m thrilled to be sharing a tour of the patio I designed for Bri Emery (aka Design Love Fest) today! If you missed the first post with the “before” images and our inspiration head HERE. Bri does a lot of traveling and I wanted to make her patio feel a bit like a boutique hotel while giving her a staycation space she wants to hang out and entertain in year round.

patio makeover sarah sherman samuel x design love festWe had all the cushions custom made from the prettiest pink outdoor fabric and hung black and white striped curtains on the corner nook to give it a pool cabana feel. The oversized mirrors anchor every other seating area creating repetition and focal points for multiple vignettes. I love having the mix of the delicate white wire chairs mixed with the more solid wood and woven captain chairs.

patio makeover sarah sherman samuel x design love festpatio makeover sarah sherman samuel x design love festWe filled the space with plants and cacti, the more the merrier. Find the DIY post for the copper plant stand, in the corner, HERE. Hanging planters are from Urban Outfitters.

The pink ones we had made to match the cushions but you can find most of the other pillows here, here, here, and here. The rattan chairs, in the back area, unfortunately turned a lot darker after weathering a few storms but the shape is still beautiful. So, FYI, buyers beware, when it says store indoors during inclement weather, they mean it. The coffee table has since sold out but I love this option as well.

patio makeover sarah sherman samuel x design love festpatio makeover sarah sherman samuel x design love festI pretty much want to head over to Bri’s every day now around happy hour. The patio is at it’s best in the early evening, plus she’s turning into quite the chef. Bri… I’m up for adoption is all I’m saying.

master bedroom / nursery nook makeover

master bedroom nursery makeover for max & margaux wanger // sarah sherman samuelLast week I introduced you to my Nursery/Master Bedroom project for Max & Margaux Wanger and I’m thrilled to share the full final tour.

Margaux and Max were expecting their second child and reached out to me to help them transform their master bedroom into a finished space for them as well as carve out a special place for the new baby. We ended up transforming the closet into to a nursery nook and designed the rest of the room to be a calming space that reflected Max and Margaux’s modern-minimal-artful lives. First up is their side of the room…

I also designed them a bench that was custom made for the tight space and sits at the foot of the bed.

nursery nook in master bedroom closet // sarah sherman samuelMeanwhile, on the other side of the room, we transformed their closet into a little nursery nook. I really wanted to make the baby space feel special (and not like we just stuck the baby in a closet) so wallpaper was the answer. The black and white animal print has just the right amount of whimsy for baby but the illustrative style and monochromatic palette fits in seamlessly with the rest of the room as well.

master bedroom nursery makeover for max & margaux wanger // sarah sherman samuelmaster bedroom nursery makeover for max & margaux wanger // sarah sherman samuelWe had the long floating shelf custom made to match the two small floating shelves I found at Target. Soft white baskets supply a lot of easy reach storage as well as the large lidded floor baskets.

The Stokke Crib is such a beautiful space saver that will grow with the baby with attachment parts, I love the round design and finally one of my original mobiles hangs above it, completing the space.

master bedroom / nursery makeover // sarah sherman samuelJust outside of the bedroom we wanted to give Margaux a space to be able to nurse and rock the new baby while also watching their older son so we created a mama station in their existing playroom. Using Max’s pink cloud print as a jumping off point, I made the rest of the space bright and open, layering soft textural pieces like the woven blanket, soft ottoman and sheepskin rug. Hanging planters brought in some kid proof greenery (anything they can’t reach is considered kid proof in my book), baskets serve as more easy access storage, and how about that beautiful rocker? I wouldn’t mind spending a few hours here.

master bedroom / nursery makeover // sarah sherman samuelmaster bedroom / nursery makeover // sarah sherman samuelmaster bedroom / nursery makeover // sarah sherman samuelThere are so many things that can feel unsettled and chaotic when you bring a new baby home and being able to give Max & Margaux a special space that is ready for the new family member will hopefully make that transition just a bit easier. If you want to get a take a peek at the before photos check last week’s post here.

modern organic bedroom makeover

kristinaandsarah640kristina-roomLast year my friend Kristina finished renovating her home from top to bottom. She selected all the fixtures and finishes herself while managing all the sub-contractors. The house turned out AMAZING but after undertaking such a huge project, being a mother to two boys, and co-running her blog 100 Layer Cake, she ran out of steam on the decor. I am all too familiar with how much work going through a renovation can be and now, as she is expecting her third babe, I teamed up with Hotel Collection, Home Design Studio and the Martha Stewart Collection, all exclusive to Macy’s, to give her a well deserved bedroom makeover! I am using the term makeover lightly as it is more of a bedroom finishing, since Kristina got off to a great start, but here is how I revamped and completed the space.

nursery progress & ikea hack DIY

ikea hack - mint dresser- nursery // sarah sherman samuelLast week you might have caught a glimpse at the one wall of the nursery that is finished, over on Mother Mag and I wanted to give you a better look, and share what I did with my dresser issue. It is a simple Ikea hack you’ve seen done a thousand times, but the most important detail is often overlooked. You just have got to do something about those legs!

tarva dresser, DIY ikea hackYou may remember on the dresser I re-worked for the cabin I cut the legs shorter. Well, for this one I kept the length the same but cut them at an angle to create a more elegant profile. It is just one small detail, but it doesn’t cost a thing to do, and it changes the look of the dresser dramatically.
