laundry room tour, before & after

finished-laundry-tour4-640Things are moving and shaking over at our A-frame cabin. We jetted over there last week to check on our new roof (!) and I shot the finished laundry room while we were at it. It’s the only space that is complete. It’s kind of a funny place to start, but renovations are full of surprises and hey, it feels so good to have one room in the bag. When we bought the place, the washer and dryer were broken and full of standing water, which was just one of the fun surprises we happened on. I worked with Electrolux to give this room an overhaul and get it back into a functional place to care for our clothes and linens. Just wait until you see the before photo!

a-frame living room update

a-frame renovation living room progress // sarah sherman samuelWell ‘knock on wood’, we found a new contractor! I am not sure why it has been so hard to track someone down for this project but I hope you guys have been bearing with me while we get all that sorted out. I don’t remember if I shared, but we need a new roof, and when you’re talking about a new A-frame roof, it is kind of a big deal and kind of a huge expense we didn’t plan for and kind of a GIANT pain in the arse. So we have been getting quotes on that all while our kitchen is still torn down to the studs, the roof has been leaking all over the new tile (so glad we didn’t put in hardwood!), there is some serious stank sewage back-up, apparently Mickey Mouse did our electrical and the air conditioning isn’t working (not ideal when it is 110 degrees outside). But on the bright side our gorgeous sofa from Arhaus has been delivered and it did not disappoint. Nope, not even a little bit.

Rupe and I hightailed to the a-frame to see the delivery, unwrapped it, took a quit sit, high-fived, snapped these pics and then wrapped it right back up so all the upcoming construction dust doesn’t soil the snow whiteness of it all. It is hard to tell in the photos but the sofa is really big, like 9 feet long big and 4o” deep. The Remington sofa comes in 4 different length options and since the space is so long naturally I went for the widest. Other customizable options are the depth, the cushion count, the wood finish on the legs (I am having a real blonde wood moment, and not a ditsy kind, I just really am loving blonde wood), and it comes in 11 different Belgian-linen options (I chose the white because I wanted to break up all the stonework). The sofa sets a pretty perfect foundation for the low loungey vibe I want to happen in here eventually

living room progress // sarah sherman samuelliving room progress // sarah sherman samuelliving room progress // sarah sherman samuel OH and I almost forgot to tell you my rug drama! Remember when I shared my design process and how I look at the sofa and rug pairing first and how that rug was one of the only things I had decided thus far? Well it arrived at my doorstep and I unwrapped it only to find what they were calling “charcoal” looked more like BROWN and more brown. I bought it off of etsy and while I was thinking I was getting the exact rug from the listing photos, they thought any rug that had those stripes would do. And while the brown wasn’t bad at all on its own, when paired with the brown stones in the room, it would all be too much… brown. I needed an actual charcoal color to cool things down and give it some contrast.

So I searched high and low for another kilim that was large enough (10′ x 13′) and came up empty. Instead I found this smaller rug, that I loved, on ebay and layered it on a larger (and less expensive) black and white striped rug to get the size and look I wanted. I love how it turned out and the two patterns give it a little extra dimension.

living room progress // sarah sherman samuelYou might recognize the coffee table from our L.A. living room (before we baby-proofed). It is actually too small for the space here, but we brought it over to sit at the foot of one of the beds, eventually, and it’s what I had on hand at the moment. So far the a-frame has served as a really cool storage facility for the few pieces of furniture we have started to accumulate for the space. I dream of the day we actually get to spend nights here. Until then, I think I’ll camp out on the sofa, wrapped in plastic or not.

Announcing… Samuel A-frame!

I am ‘squirming in my seat excited’ to share some news that is two-fold, a teensy bit bitter and a lot bit sweet. First, while we were in the mode of big changes over here… we sold our cabin in Michigan!    Ok, as I type this I am getting a little sentimental and feeling that bitter side just a titch more. We recently said goodbye to our little oasis in Michigan, as it was increasingly difficult to get there as much as we would have liked to BUT…. since we had so much fun renovating the cabin from top to bottom we are now saying hello to a new cabin, a new project, in a new place (a lot closer to home). WE JUST BOUGHT THIS A-FRAME IN PALM SPRINGS!

a-frame // sarah sherman samuelMuch like the Michigan cabin, this place needs A LOT of work. The inside is just woah, and not in a good way. I’m talking painted cloud murals, a scary dungeon-esque bathroom, and stanky old carpet… just to name a few. But, look at the bones! I have alwayyyyyys loved an A-frame and this one is pretty freaking unique. I mean do you see that roofline? That gap at the top is also a skylight that runs the length of the A-frame. My heart eyes were popping out of my face so hard when I saw it.

a-frame // sarah sherman samuelSo let the renovating begin! I can’t wait to get over there and start making it our new special hideaway. I snapped these photos with my iPhone quick when we went to pick up the keys this weekend (eeeeeeek!) but I will share a full proper tour soon! x

See the Michigan Cabin renovations from start to finish (well in reverse order) here.

from the weekendssss

lake michigan bather // sarah sherman samuelHi Hi, sorry for the radio silence over here. We were in Michigan for three weeks and while I intended to take a week off from the blog to fully enjoy the cabin, that week turned into two when my computer went kaput! Nothing like a forced vacation, although it’s not like I minded too too much. I was also hoping to launch a blog/shop/website re-design while I was away but of course that didn’t happen either. Instead we spent a lot of time with family, introduced archer to the wonders of Michigan, and did a lot of what is pictured above. Now we are back in LA, back at it and I hope to get the new site launched ASAP. Stay tuned… x sarah

Oh and PS happy fourth and all that. Hope you guys had a nice holiday while I was away.
Oh and PPS, did you see my Domino Magazine Instagram takeover? Take a peek for more from my trip.

from the weekend: michigan to la

cabin-weekendThis weekend we said sayonara to the cabin for a little while and headed back to LA, but not before sitting on the beach through one of the most amazing sunsets I’ve seen yet, and savoring every last minute in our little place of refuge. No cell signal and no wifi meant a forced unplugging but I have to say for the most part it was pretty great. A true getaway. Hope you had a lovely weekend. x sarah

from the weekend: cabin time

lake-michigan-cabinWe made it over to the cabin this weekend and had my sister and her family (2 kids and husband), and my parents over for a day at the lake, BBQ and all. My sister lives in Wyoming so it was a real treat to have her and my adorable niece and nephew there. Living far from family isn’t always the easiest but it definitely makes it extra sweet when you can gather a few together. Hope you had a great weekend.
