2014

top ten moments of 2014

Happy first of the year! I’m taking a quick moment to look back at some of my favorite posts from 2014…

workspace // sarah sherman samuel#1. I moved in to my new studio space, built DIY shelves, settled in with a lot of plants, and finished it off with the perfect light and some DIY artwork.

south beach, miami // sarah sherman samuel#2. Rupert turned 40 this year! We went to Miami to celebrate along with a slew of friends and did it up like the old days. Our mini guide to Miami here and a post on the Wynwood Art District, here.

patio lounge // DIY built-in benches // smitten studio#3. We created this cozy back patio area with DIY benches and it turned out to be the perfect place to entertain.

one_kings_lane_sunnyafternoon_playingwithdogs#4. I partnered up with One Kings Lane for an A Sunny Afternoon Artisanal sale and they stopped by the studio to snap some shots of me working (and playing with the pups) for an interview.

master bedroom // smitten studio#5. We broke ground on an addition to the house, lived through chaos through the renovation, moved into the new bedroom

bathroom renovation // sarah sherman samuel … and bathroom…

kitchen renovation // sarah sherman samuel …and an almost finished kitchen (*finally*) and have been slowly finishing each space ever since. (see the entire renovation from back to front, here)

lake powell // sarah sherman samuel#6. We took what was one of our favorite vacations, a 5 night road-trip covering, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. (you can see all of our travels here).

a sunny afternoon summer lookbook // sarah sherman samuel#7. I released the summer collection of A Sunny Afternoon with a swoon worthy lookbook… I think the new items are some of the best yet.

sarah sherman samuel for anthropologie #8. This Anthropologie shoot was one of my favorites to work on. (you can see the rest of my style (and bump style) posts from the year here).

lake michigan cabin // sarah sherman samuel #9. We didn’t get to the cabin as much this year but when we did… it was heaven.

#10. And, of course, the moment to top all moments was when we found out we were expecting a little one. We made this little pregnancy announcement video to share the news (or see the original post here).

I can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store and am so thankful to have this little space that connects me with you guys. Thank you for popping in, sharing your lives, and for following along on the wild ride. Happy New Year! xo

Happy New Year!

We spent New Years Eve with one of my oldest friends and her husband in a SUPER snowy chicago. We rented this great loft, shared a delicious meal, played ping pong, and danced our way into 2014. There was something really special about ending a year while reminiscing about our childhood and looking back at where we both were at different stages of life.

golden new years eve // smitten studioNow, looking back over the past year as it came to a close, I saw a lot of change in 2013. There were big changes in my career path, (I worked my last day at my previous job and launched A Sunny Afternoon), and changes in my surroundings (moving and renovating). This time last year things definitely looked a lot different from what they do now, and I’m looking forward to seeing where 2014 will take us.

I loved this quote by Neil Gaiman and it couldn’t ring more true for myself and for my wish to you…

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it. Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

I am still working out my resolutions for this year but I am sure it will be filled with more change, more doing, making, and seeing, and definitely more mistakes. I mentioned a few areas I would like to work at on instagram, like traveling more, worrying less, and loving more, but I’d like to make more specific goals as well, tangible things that lead to the bigger picture. Goals like hiring an assistant so that I am free to create more, or getting my studio set up and organized so that I am less frazzled. While I am still getting mine all sorted out, what are some of your resolutions for 2014?

Cheers to mistakes! x
