backyard patio // before & afterI realized I’ve shared the far side of our backyard quite a bit, but never posted the final patio/back of the house since we added on the bedroom and laundry room, which has now become a great little landing pad/hang out spot when friends come by. We had the deck built connecting from the laundry room to our bedroom (which you can see the beginnings of here) and although the space is quite small, with a little help from Target we have now made the deck inviting as the rest of the yard i.e. the pergola and the larger patio area. patio-after6-640patio-after5-640 I started by laying down an outdoor rug which helps to extend the living room right out onto the patio. The french doors both open up onto the patio so on the warm days we truly have the indoor/outdoor living room which we, especially the dogs and Archer, love.

  • The before / after is stunning! I love the contrast of the darker exterior paired with the Target products … which look like they came from an upscale boutique. Well done, Target!

  • It looks amazing Sarah! So satisfying when you look back at the before pics. We finally cleared and turfed our garden to make it more baby friendly for the summer (it was kind of a jungle before!) Love the Target pieces too (oh, how I wish we had Target in England). Hope the A Frame project is going well too 🙂

    • I love your house! I’ve been wanting to paint mine a dark grey-black, you’r is exactly what I’m thinking. Can you tell me what color you used, and where you got the paint? I’ve been getting paint samples from Lowes and HomeDepot, but can’t seem to find just the right one. Thanks!

Where are the large pots from?

  • Yasmin

Looks amazing – what a transformation!! Do you mind telling me what color you used on the deck? 🙂

Hi! Thank you and of course! It’s 2 parts provencal and 1 part light walnut by varathane.

    • Elisa Davis

Can you tell me more about the wood trim around your doors? Did you stain that yourself or did you order them that way? If you stained them would you mind sharing the stain color used? It looks different from your patio. Thanks!

Those doors are gorgeous! Do you have any hidden screens on them or worry about the bugs? I’m in southern California too, and I’m considering french doors to replace our sliders, but the screens are essential as we always get flies and moths in the house. I just don’t know how that looks with the double doors.

    • sarah

We don’t have any screens, and we don’t really get any bugs! (Unless we leave them open at night, but during the day it’s never an issue)

  • Beatiful transformation. I love it. Congratulations

Very cleverly designed deck wrapping the house and bridging various surfaces and doorway elevations. Really brings a cohesive look and friendly functionality to the space.

  • LOoks nice, Sarah, i like. Beautifull colour

  • I absolutely adore your black exterior. Way to go bold. Faaaaantastic, my dear.

  • Katherine Seaberg

Gorgeous! Curious if you know the name of the purple-ish potted plant? I have a similar corner on my back deck and have been looking for something just that size/style.

Hi! What kind of wood windows did you use here?(TM Cobb?) I’m currently overwhelmed by window choice. Do you have a brand you really like or a window guy you prefer in Los Angeles.
      Many thanks

  • Elaine

What a transformation! I love your deck and all you have done with your yard. Your french doors in that wood tone really add warmth. My yard could desperately use your touch. It’s a simple style 60s ranch and I need ideas in a yard makeover! If you’re ever looking for such a project . . .

Hello! I’m about to paint my house the same color! I’m excited! Did you go flat or low-lustre? If you went flat, how has it held up and has it been easy enough to clean? Thanks!

  • Nicole Riffle

What brand was the front door you used on your Venice beach house? Thank you!

  • Maria Petsos

Can you tell me the color you used to stain the wood trim!
