8 best pink sofasAfter living with my pink sofa in the studio for a while now I thought mayyyybe I would get over it, but I haven’t. It still makes me smile on the daily, and now I’ve been seeing pink sofas all over the place so I’ve rounded up my current faves so you can get the look.

wardrobe tune-up

trunk-club-LAIf you have been following me around on Instagram or Snapchat (@sarahssamuel) you know I’m in New York this week. Before I left I dropped into the Trunk Club LA location because my ‘new mom’, ‘laid back california’, ‘work for yourself’, wardrobe needed a serious tune-up before the trip. Trunk Club recently opened up their services to Women so I was excited when they invited me to come in and try it out. It felt like perfect timing to fill my suitcase with pieces that are a bit more polished.

If you haven’t heard of them yet, Trunk Club is a personal styling service you can work with in two different ways. They offer an actual trunk service to women throughout the continental US, where when you sign up you are paired with a dedicated stylist who gets to know your style, sizes, needs etc and then they curate a personalized trunk of clothes that ships right to your door. The thing I like about that service is that it isn’t a subscription, so you just reach out to them on an as needed basis. Like when you are going on a trip or the start of a new season etc.

And if you are lucky enough to live in one of the cities where they have their clubhouses (Chicago, New York, Dallas, DC and LA) you can meet-up with your personal stylist in person, relax and have a drink at the bar, and try on clothes that they curated for you.  That is what I did and it was so much fun. I got paired up with Simone, we chatted on the phone before my appointment so I could talk about my style and needs. I wanted clothes that could easily mix and match (to make it easy to fit in a carryon) and get me from meetings to site seeing to dinner etc.

trunk-club-LA5When I arrived she had a rack of clothes, shoes and accessories waiting for me. After having a drink at the gorgeous bar, she took me back to a little lounge area with my own dressing room where I was able to try on all the pieces. I have to say I felt a little like a celebrity! I thought only the rich and famous get to go to these private clubhouses and get to have a personal stylist. The whole process was so easy and nice. No battling traffic and parking garages around the malls, no waiting in line for dressing rooms or trying to track down someone to help you get a different size etc. I just rolled up, parked right in front (that sounds funny to say outloud but it is a big luxury in LA) and got to choose pieces from a rack that was already curated to my taste. They carry a lot of my favorite labels so it wasn’t hard to fall in love with a few of the looks.

trunk-club-LA2trunk-club-LA3trunk-club-LA4I ALMOST went home with those shoes… I did love them so… but I am not sure if I can rock that high of a heel anymore, especially in New York, where people actually walk places. I did, however, go home with a few of the pieces like that jumpsuit, the black cropped jeans, the white fringe shirt, the chambray jacket (which was a major splurge but I’m chalking it up as an investment piece that I will have forever, at least that is what I told myself) and a dress not pictured. Some of the pieces were a lot like ones that I already own (chambray and black and white foreverrrr), so I didn’t need to purchase, but it was great having the photos of the outfits put together so when I was packing I could remember what to include and how we styled them in with the new pieces.

The whole process had me really leaning towards developing more of a capsule wardrobe. Less pieces but better quality.

clear the shelters event

sarah sherman samuel // family Created with Petco

Pet adoption has always been near and dear to my heart. I wish I could personally house all the homeless pets out there but for now Rupe has limited me to our two (adorable) dogs. However, I am gearing up for the second annual ‘Clear the Shelters‘ pet adoption campaign, coming up on Saturday July 23rd, where Local NBC and Telemundo Television Stations team up with hundreds of animal shelters to match homeless pets with new homes. Last year they were able to place nearly 20,000 animals with new families!! So although I may just be going to support the efforts, I can’t promise I won’t take home just one more pup. Rupert might not notice just one more dog in the bed?

In honor of the upcoming event, Petco asked me to share my own pet adoption story, and since all moms can’t pass up an excuse to talk about their children (fur children included), I said sign me up! Also, it’s for a great cause. Petco is a main sponsor of the ‘Clear the Shelters’ event and have always been committed to a “Think Adoption First” philosophy. They host monthly in-store adoptions events (much like the ones where I found Pikku and Cracker) and have never sold cats or dogs in their stores. I am really happy to team up with them for this, to hopefully help find loads of pets their new homes, and to talk about how my two girls came to be part of the Samuel family.

samuel familysamuel familyWe found Pikku 7 years ago at an adoption center, or rather, I found Pikku at an adoption center, while Rupert was out of town. I grew up with a dog and cats my entire childhood but didn’t have a pet in my adult life and desperately wanted one. I used to ride my bike by this pop up adoption center every once in awhile and one day stopped in. There were so many adorable pups and I am such an emotional puddle when it comes to animals that I was a wreck. Pikku climbed right up on my lap and I filled out the application then and there. The agency does home checks, and all that, so I had plenty of time to tell Rupe about what I did later. ;) But really, I left and called Rupe immediately… told him I found a dog and we need her. When he got back in town we were able to arrange a time for Rupert to meet her and, as I knew would happen, Rupe turned into a puddle as well and there was no way we were leaving Pikku behind. We welcomed her home a few days later after home checks and her last round of immunizations (she was about a year old at the time).

pikkuAnd thus we started life as three. At that time I was at a full time job where they let me bring her to work every day and it was great! After about a year the office moved and they no longer allowed pets in the new space, so I would drive home 15-20 mins every day for lunch, walk Pikku, grab some food, and then drive back to work. Pikku felt the change, she didn’t love being at home on her own for two 4 hour chunks of time so that was when mission ‘find Pikku a friend’ came into play and I started casually working the idea into conversations with Rupe. Like “oh hey did you pick up the milk? We should really get another dog.”

Finally, one day we were out with Pikku and drove past the same pop-up pet adoption center and I was like “hey let’s just go check it out, See if Pikku responds to any of the dogs” (meanwhile, I had been stalking their website and knew there was a beautiful three legged dog about Pikku’s size and build that would be at the center that day). So we walked on over and the volunteers let us take Sardinia (the three legged sweetheart) on a walk with Pikku and it was not ideal. Basically they didn’t want anything to do with each other. I really had my heart set on finding Pikku a comrade (and Sardinia a home) but it wasn’t meant to be. Just as we were about to leave this little spitfire terrier caught my attention.

crackersss_petco-97Her name was “Spicy”, and she was probably the most adorably wire haired terrier I ever did see, and I wasn’t the only one who connected with her. Pikku and Spicy were all over each other, egging each other on to play and tails wagging incessantly. Rupert wouldn’t have been able to resist even if he tried (he did not).

Since it was the same adoption agency we went through before, they didn’t have to do the home check or any of the wait time so suddenly we were going home with two dogs. Just like that, Spicy (which we then re-named to be Cracker) was one of us.

samuel familysss_petco-70I still have the video of when we first brought them home together. They chased each other and played like crazy until they fell asleep and have been inseparable ever since. Pikku changed back into her happy spunky self and Cracker is her forever hysterical side kick. She also makes a great Archie sidekick too!

sss_petco-77I mean, I just can’t even take this photo!

If you are looking to add a new furry friend (or two) to your family, join Petco and I, and get yourself to a participating shelter on July 23rd!

project staycation patio

staycation patio design // Sarah Sherman Samuel x Design Love FestI’m excited to share a kind of a dream project that I’ve been working on for Bri Emery of Design Love Fest. Her patio is TO DIE FOR so when she came to me for help with the design and furniture selects in the space I couldn’t wait to get started. She wanted it to be an ideal space for entertaining and one that felt relaxing, inviting, and had a jungle/loungey/’feel like a hotel’ kind of vibe. I took those descriptive words and pulled together this inspiration board, outlining the ‘staycation patio’ direction visually.

Below is what the space looks like now but we have been busy collecting pieces, getting custom cushions made and plant shopping galore. To see a full tour of the “before” photos check out Bri’s post from today, here. It is going to be so good right?

bri-patio-beforebri-patio-sssxdesignlovefestAbove is all the furniture selects I made for the design board and what will be making their way into the space over the next coming weeks. I designed a wood door to get custom made for a little archway entrance (that’s a little rendering you see on the bottom left), the seat cushions are getting made in this gorgeous pink fabric, and how about those gorgeous woven rattan chairs!? All the sources are listed below. I’m so looking forward to sharing the final space soon and next up is her dining room!

picnic brunch studio warming party

picnic brunch // studio warming partysarahshermansamuel-2sarahshermansamuel-3A couple weeks ago I invited a few of my favorite boss lady friends over to break in the new studio. I’ve been working so much lately and all the women that came are killing it too so I used the newly finished space as an excuse to lure them all over to take a much needed midweek break for brunch and bubbles.

Dasani Sparkling supplied all the sparkling water we could drink as we tested out the new flavors (raspberry lemonade was the clear favorite of the day) while munching chicken and waffle bites, yogurt parfaits, frittatas, and breakfast tartines.

Click through to see the delish spread, some gorgeous florals, tabletop inspiration, and a sneak peek into the finished space.
