12 leather accent chairs

round up // best leather accent chairs // sarah sherman samuelIt doesn’t matter the room, I swear… 9 times out of 10 a leather accent chair is the answer. I LOVE a good leather chair and through my searches for the perfect pair for the A-frame, I rounded up 12 of swoon worthy seats that have one thing in common. Beautiful, natural… leather.

art from life’s moments

framebridge-cactus-prints-3-640 The new studio is starting to come together! I’ve been having a lot of fun slowly collecting pieces that I truly love and only bringing those items into the space. I’d rather do without for the time being, leaving a space empty, than to rush to fill the gaps just for the sake of getting it finished. Of course it takes more time doing it this way but it is also what gives you that yummy collected feel. And bonus… when you have a bazillion other things going on you can’t help but work on curating your own space over time… i.e. when you have the chance.

framebridge-cactus-prints-2-640One thing I knew I wanted to include in the space was my own photography. I love looking back at instagram and my iphone gallery of photos but some of the memories I’ve captured I really wanted to see big and be reminded of the happy times on the daily. I took this cactus photo on our first family vacation with Archer in Palm Springs. We were nervous and excited, brand new parents, with a tiny baby, and looking back that time went by in such a flash, I decided to frame this to remind me of where we’ve been and how far we’ve come. I wanted the print to be extra large so I decided to break it up into a diptych, ordering two frames at the largest size Framebridge offers (40″ long), making one jumbo statement.

Buying or framing oversize art can be so expensive but splitting a print up into two frames is an easy way to cut down on the cost and I am always pleasantly surprised at just how easy printing and framing with Framebridge is.

framebridge-gif-small2You upload your art, select a frame, and they ship it to you all ready to hang, along with everything you need to hang it (except the hammer).

framebridge-cactus-prints-4-640Now that Archie is a bit older and I spend a lot of time in the studio, I love being surrounded by memories of when he was just a wee one. P.S. I CAN NOT believe how big he is.

weekend scenes: create & cultivate

downtown-la-sarahshermansamuelThis weekend I spoke on a panel at Create & Cultivate, the conference & online platform geared towards women entrepreneurs in the digital space, and although nerve wracking at first it was empowering to see so many women business owners share their stories and be able to connect with people doing the same thing. Working for yourself you don’t always get to hang out with fellow designers or talented folks that are paving their own way and the conference was humming with them.

create-cultivate-rose-gardencreate-cultivate-sarahshermansamuelcreate-cultivatecreate-cultivate-panelI was talking alongside some of my favorite boss ladies in the design & digital world…Emily Henderson, Amber Lewis of Amber Interiors, Sara Sugarman of Lulu & Georgia, Bri Emery of DesignLoveFest, and Victoria Smith of SF Girl by Bay. Mat of Consort moderated our panel and you can see our entire hour long pow wow on their facebook page! Or if you just want the very abbreviated cliffs notes of the day… Racked LA highlighted a few key points from the Keynotes of Jessica Alba, Chelsea Handler and Rachel Zoe.

mothers-dayAnd then Sunday, I snuggled my babe all Mother’s Day long. Rupert packed us all a picnic and we went to watch a polo match at Will Rogers State Park and then I got a massage that I think nearly killed me. haha. Too much pressure on my extra tense muscles! Two epson salt baths later and I am still recovering.

Happy Mother’s day to all you mama’s, the hardest and most rewarding job out there. xo

project light lab

kitchen-rendering2-sssFor the last couple months I have been working behind the scenes for a creative dynamo of a client (actually clients). Anne Sage and Team Woodnote have teamed up in a joint venture called “Light Lab” which is a creative warehouse/studio space in Atwater Village that will be available for photo shoots, workshops, events, etc. and they turned to me for the design of the kitchen and bathroom. It has been such a fun project to work on because kitchens and baths are my favorite to design and they pretty much let me do whatever the heck I wanted. Which included incorporating some unexpected materials, and also featuring one of my own wallpaper designs!

light-lab-before Above is the kitchen rendering and cabinet plan I shared with them for the design proposal. We are going with black slab cabinets, black appliances, and doing a tile feature on the island (yum). Since it is a warehouse space, everything is in one giant room so I wanted the kitchen to be clean and modern (blending in with the space) but still have special moments like the tile, the extra long floating shelves, and brass stools and a plywood feature wall (more on that soon) that make it unique.

Directly above you are looking at the before photo of where the kitchen will go. We had all sorts of plumbing and electrical work that needed to get done, delaying things ,which seems to be the usual with renovations, but install day should be any day now and I am over here waiting like a kid for Christmas.

Meanwhile… the bathroom is a tad bit further along…

light-lab-bathroom-sssand again, here is the design board, rounding up all the selects. I love love a bold bathroom, so we went for it… gold accents, wallpaper, and the black and white triangle floor tile all make this heart go pitter patter. Especially the wallpaper because… I have been developing my own wallpaper collection and this is the first time seeing one my new designs up and in a space! It isn’t available anywhere yet, but I was able to do a custom print for them.

light-lab-bathroom-wallpaper-sssYou may have seen this sneak peek on instagram, and I know I say this all the time, but I really can’t wait to show you more, just as I can’t wait to see more! Hurry up contractors!!!

a-frame update

wood-look-tile-flooringWell the good news is… the dark grout is gone and I breathed one giant sigh of relief. It looks soooo much better. This photo isn’t the best but you get the idea at least. Now you see the tile first instead of the grout lines. PHEW.

kitchen-progressand the bad news is… our kitchen still looks exactly like this. With all the rain we learned the roof that we knew we needed to get replaced is in even worse shape than we thought. Like water everywhere in the house bad. So that is taking a priority and we have yet to find someone to do it. Contractors seem to be extra slippery around these parts.

So in the meantime… I gathered some extra dreamy kitchens to get us through until I have something better to report.

kitchen-counter-hecker-guthriemarble-kitchen-cork-stoolskitchen-marble-brass-tabskitchen-marble-island-2Clearly I still have a major thing for marble. I went totally ga ga over each one of these. They also all have one other thing in common and that is plain front cabinets. I love how clean and modern they are. Oh, and check back tomorrow because I am sharing the design of a dreamboat of a kitchen (and bathroom) that I’ve been working on for a client (you may have caught a sneak peek here).

Minimal Luxe – Workspace

matte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspaceHP might have just launched the most beautiful laptop that has ever graced this earth. Matte black and copper! Need I say more? In honor of the debut they invited me to design a workspace, inspired by the sleek obsession-worthy laptop, and I said…. um, yes please!

matte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspacematte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspaceminimal modern luxe - workspace Copper has already been all over my radar, I have been pinning and collecting copper pieces here and there for my home and office so when I got the first glance and the new Spectre it got really excited to create a copper accented workstation to match. Above is the design board I pulled together to set the tone. I’m calling it Minimal Modern Luxe. The copper chair with its’ curved seat juxtaposed with its’ straight lines go hand in hand with the laptop’s curved hinges and the matte black accent wall lays the foundation for the copper accents to pop just like on the Spectre.

matte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspacematte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspacematte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspacematte black & copper // minimal modern luxe - workspaceTo get the luxe look without spending a fortune, I splurged on some pieces like the chair, and saved on others, by doing an ikea hack desk, for example. The marble printed parson’s desk from West Elm was gorgeous and all but instead I took this basic Ikea desk, and wrapped the top with black marble contact paper, to up the table’s glam game.

And there you have it, a workspace fit for the design (and copper) obsessed to match the laptop of my dreams. Check out the ‘making of’ video to see how they teamed up with artists to create two limited edition versions (one is plated in 18K gold!!).
