in my bag: home for the holidays

in my bag, michigan // smitten studioLike I mentioned before, I am really looking forward to heading to my parents house in Michigan for some downtime. I’ll be packing my coziest sweaters and comfiest pajamas (which I will most likely be wearing for a large portion of the days while we happily hibernate through the holiday). My to do list has a long way to go before we head out, but you better believe my bags are packed!

DIY – copper wall hanging

Entryway // DIY wall hanging // smitten studioThis weekend I also put my crafting muscles to work with a little project to spruce up our entryway. I’ve been spending so much time in Home Depot that I started looking at the materials in a different way and thought of this simple way to bring the aesthetic of a macramé or woven wall hanging (with a little metallic flair) into our space.

All of our money is going into the renovation right now so we don’t have a lot to play with to decorate and I am SO over having blank walls. So, while I still plan on getting a real deal macramé piece made by fellow Michigander Sally England once our bank accounts have recovered, I made this to tide me over.

We bought that credenza, which is really a mini bar, from CB2 when we first moved into our old house (6 years ago) and have never actually used it as a bar. In our last home it was in the bedroom and here it works out perfectly as an entryway piece. I love that it has drawers for small things like keys and sunglasses and bigger doors for hats or bags (hiding all the clutter that usually lands on the kitchen counter).

from the weekend: holiday party season

12.15.13-weekendPossibly one of the best parts of this time of year is all of the holiday parties and merry making festivities. We’ve have quite a few over the last couple weeks and two more this weekend. Its wonderful seeing everyone all dressed up in their sparkliest wear. Friends you see all the time and friends you almost never get a chance to catch up with, and co-workers (well this year I should say Rupe’s co-workers, I don’t think Pikku & Cracker fulfill that label for me), all gathered to celebrate. I mean who doesn’t love it?

One of the parties I went to this weekend was a more intimate Christmas party with a handful of girlfriends where we had a white elephant gift exchange. I left smiling with this clutch and two beautiful shades of lip conditioner by Ilia. Happy Christmas to me! ;)

shopping for pendant lights

kitchen light planning // smitten studioNow that the cabinet doors and drawer fronts are on, I think it is about time we address the lighting situation. The naked bulb dangling above the countertop is not cutting it. Do you see it up the top left corner, just hanging there waiting until nightfall when it will blind us with its fully exposed 75watts. Yep, thats the one. I am thinking of replacing it with a pair of pendant lights.

smitten travels: joshua tree & 29 palms inn

joshua tree // smitten studiojoshua tree // smitten studiojoshua tree // 29 palms inn // smitten studiojoshua tree // 29 palms inn // smitten studioI remember driving through Joshua Tree National Park on a family vacation as a youngster and being thoroughly unimpressed. I’m not sure if I was too young to appreciate the landscape (big deal another weird looking tree) or if my motion sickness from the drive tainted the experience (vomiting tends to do that, eww), but now that I’ve revisited it a few times as an adult I have completely fell in love with its wide open spaces, unusual terrain and otherworldly plant-life.  More after the jump…

from the weekend: meetaversary & holiday parties

12.09.13weekendThis weekend Rupe and I celebrated our 7 year meetaversary. The photo above right was taken on the night that we first met when this strange zealous English guy decided to randomly crash our girls night out. Little did I know at the time, that the random would soon be my my better half. It is so fun looking back at the few photos we have of that night (thanks to my friend Giselle having a camera on hand to record inspiration from Art Basel), it makes the memories all the more vivid. Do you guys celebrate a meetaversary or a first date?

The rest of the weekend was filled with holiday parties and a little pampering at the beautiful nail salon of Olive & June (designed by Tenover6 owners Brady Cunningham and Kristen Lee).
