Smitten Studio turns one

smitten studio birthday 1Happy birthday Smitten Studio!

This last Saturday marked the year anniversary of the creation of Smitten Studio. To celebrate the occasion what else could I do but partake in a little chocolate cupcake love fest?

I originally started the blog a couple of years ago (with a free blogger account at the time) but I only posted a handful of times and the template site just wasn’t me. A year ago is when I designed and launched Smitten Studio as it is today. It has been an exciting year around here, especially with the cabin renovation and leaving my day job and I can’t wait to see what the next year of SS will hold. You can find a little peek of what is to come on my updated about page here.

Here is to another great year!

new zealand here we come

smitten studio sheep new zealandLast anniversary Rupert surprised me with tickets to Auckland! New Zealand has always been on the top of my list of places to go and I can not wait to head over there and explore. While he took care of the flights, we still have not booked all of our lodging or planned much of anything for the trip, which is now coming up very soon! So today my mind is in the green hills of the New Zealand countryside while I plan our adventure.

Any Kiwi’s out there with tips or must see sights? Or have you been? …any recommendations on things to see, places to eat, shops to be visited?

cabin progress: kitchen plate rail

cabin kitchen with shelf // smitten studioIt has been a while since I have done a cabin update. Things over there have had to slow down over the winter as it is just too cold to do a lot of things and too cold for me to want to visit as frequently! We were there over the holidays though, so although we didn’t get a ton accomplished we did put up this plate rail/spice rack of a shelf in the kitchen.

cabin kitchen // smitten studioI am planning to put some full sized open shelving on the back wall as well, but now that I see how the oak shelf looks above the oak countertop, I might paint the shelves white. When in doubt paint it white right? Or in my case, when in doubt paint it “whisper gray”?

So far in the kitchen we have:
1. Torn everything down to the studs. 2. Hung, finished, and painted the drywall. 3. Refinished & trimmed out the ceiling 3. Assembled the new Cabinets 3. Installed the new flooring. 4. Put in the new oak countertop 5. Placed the new appliances and apron front sink. 6. Put up the subway tile back splash and put on the cabinet hardware.  7. Created a plate rail/spice rack above the backsplash.

Still to do in the kitchen:
1. Grout the tile back splash (yes, I know we are taking forever on this part. This is one DIY that makes me a little nervous and I decided I will wait until the walls aren’t so freaking cold to tackle that project). 2. Make and install the rest of the shelving. 3. Find a rug.

from the weekend: a sunny hike & bicycle rides

01.14.13 weekendWe took full advantage of the sunshine this weekend. Although, it was cold for California, the skies were crystal clear and the sun was shining. So, we layerd up our clothing, took the dogs on a long hike, and went for a bicycle ride.

instagram 2012 & glitter guide

instagram heart 2012 sarah sherman samuel
I woke up to such a lovely surprise this past wednesday. Glitter Guide had picked their Top 20 Instagram Accounts to follow and I was one of them! My phone was lighting up like a Christmas tree with all of the IG notifications. :)

It was great to see some of my favorite users selected as well like @bonnie, @sittinginatree, @amanda100lc, and @pennyweight and perfect to find a few new must follows like @alice_gao and @eatsleepwear.

Seeing the feature had me scrolling through my feed to remind myself what I have been documenting. What I love about instagram is that it holds all your captured moments in one place and at the end of the year you have a little pocket full of memories. So, I pulled out about 100 of my favorite instagrammed moments from the year to remind myself of what great things we got up to in 2012.

Thanks Glitter Guide!

My image in Glamour Magazine

stop smell the roses printsarah sherman samuel roses glamour magazineRemember when I shared this Stop and Smell the Roses post? Well, shortly after Alexandra from Glamour magazine contacted me to see if they could include my image in February’s issue. Of course I agreed and I finally got my hands on one today! It’s so fun to see it in print.

I also had a few inquiries about being able to purchase the print so I set up a Society 6 shop for anyone that would like to get a print or an iPhone case etc. Who doesn’t need a little reminder to slow things down a bit?
