from the weekend: baby showers & birthday parties

10.20.14weekendThis weekend we got a taste of what is to come with a little one. I had a friend’s baby shower on Saturday and then a 4 year olds birthday party on Sunday. We were surrounded by little ones, moms and moms and dads to be, and I found myself thanking God I have friends with kids to help show me the way (especially one’s that throw an epic boy scout party like the one above! :).

I reached the 5 month mark and might not wear anything but dresses for the rest of the pregnancy. So comfortable and who needs pants anyway?

my (bump) style: sweats in the city!

AdvertisementAdvertisementmy bump style // 22 weeks // smitten studioWell it’s official, I have a recognizable baby bump! A perfect stranger asked if I was expecting and it made me so happy, ha! And so begins my quest for dressing my growing belly in stylish ways that don’t scream maternity (and are comfortable too!).

I matched mine with a leather jacket and my new favorite heeled booties to run errands and show off the new bump!

from the weekend: malibu

end of summer // malibu // smitten studiomalibu airbnb // smitten studioPool time, book reading, a beautiful wedding, beach days, and this peaceful mountain top rental property made for a pretty wonderful weekend in Malibu for this mama to be. I found the cabin on Airbnb which came complete with a private pool and gorgeous mountain views. Even though we were less than an hour from home, we could have been a million miles away, waking up to the sound of a distant rooster crow and cows mooing! I love living in the city but I also crave these quiet escapes.

morning view // malibu airbnb // smitten studioOur morning view of the mist coming up from the ocean (above) and the walk down to my favorite beach, El Matador, which was just a short drive down the mountain.

el matador state beach // smitten studiobackyard wedding // malibuI have never been to a more stunning backyard wedding. Candles floated in the pool, hung from the trees in lanterns, and were nestled all around the garden. The interior shot was of the bride and groom’s house, I just couldn’t NOT take a photo. :)

el matador state beach // smitten studioel matador state beach // smitten studioWe ended the weekend with a day at El Matador and at 21 weeks pregnant the walk back up to the car was definitely a little more difficult than I remember! (still worth it though).

Places we enjoyed:
Our Airbnb Rental
Nobu (best seaside restaurant)
The Malibu Cafe (tucked back in the mountains about 6 mins from our rental)
El Matador State Beach
Malibu Wines (we didn’t go this trip but great for wine tasting)
Malibu Country Mart (shopping and star sighting if you are into that ;)

in my bag: malibu

in my bag // malibu // smitten studioRupe and I have a wedding to go to in Malibu this weekend, and while it is not too far of a drive for us, I thought we should make a fun little mini-vaca out of it. I am becoming increasingly aware that these romantic weekend trips will probably be put on hold for a long while after baby comes, so I am going to fit in as many as we can until then.  I found a little cottage on AirBnB that is tucked up in the mountains and while I can’t wait to celebrate the newlyweds, I will also be looking forward to some calm respite in the woods.

In my bag is a mix of maternity and non-maternity wear. I can still fit into most regular tees and tops but at 21 weeks I’ve made the cross-over to maternity dresses and jeans. I have been loving Asos and TopShop for the mama-to-be clothes as they are pretty reasonably priced, but also fashion forward instead of frumpy and blah. I am to the point where I don’t feel very attractive in this crazy changing body and having cute clothing options are definitely a help.

Sidenote: I have been asked a lot about what camera I use and while all my instagram and most of my travel photos are just shot on my iPhone, my interior shots on the blog and style posts are taken on my Canon 7D (which I included above). Also, some of you have asked about a tutorial on my editing process for my iPhone photos and I promise I will put one together soon!

home progress: living room nook refresh

You may remember this corner of the room from ages ago. We had just done phase one of construction, which was opening up two walls that separated the living room from the den and the living room from the kitchen, but had yet to even start on all the main construction.

Since those last photos, amongst the main projects of gutting the kitchen, adding on a bedroom, bathroom and laundry room, we also made these built-in shelves and finished the entryway, and in the process I cleaned out this living room corner of everything, stealing the tchotchkes and books to fill shelves and style corners elsewhere. It has sat empty and neglected for a good eight months or so. Thankfully Target sent me over some of their items from their new fall line, so I was able to finish off this cozy nook all over again. I am LOVING all the gold in the collection.

living-room-reading-cornerliving-room-reading-corner2living-room-reading-corner3Rupe has also already commandeered the rocker that we got from the flea market as his personal TV watching chair. It is actually the most comfy spot in the house, when the cushions are on (they are so ugly at the moment I just can’t keep them on unless in use.. ha), so I found a spot here that he can swivel around to watch his favorite show Project Runway ;), or I can swivel back to steal a quiet moment to read. We will see when baby comes if it will actually make it into the nursery. Maybe I should start shopping for another rocker.
